Pier 23

FTZ #3 Piers 19 - 23 Concept Study, 350,000 sf, the Embarcadero, San Francisco, CA
Concept for the Renovation of Federal Trade Zone #3 into premium warehouse and Maritime Museum space. A radical reimagining of an existing dilapidated pier and wharf complex dedicated to Federal Trade Zone #3, a duty-free holding dock and warehouse for goods in transit. To balance public access requirements with the high security aspect of the FTZ we developed a concept for a satellite exhibition space for the Maritime Museum to transform the connector pier between the neo-classic facades of Piers 19 and 23.
The adapted space presents a glass box to the Embarcadero, protected by deep overhangs and scroll-down exterior shades, that exhibits artifacts related to the maritime history of San Francisco Bay. The museum space serves as a lobby for the two-story warehouse and related offices behind, with a main corridor set on a visual axis to the museum at Treasure Island halfway across the Bay. Skylights throughout bring daylight to all the spaces while night cooling across the concrete pier decks economically reduces cooling loads. The project is a study in reconnecting the main Piers to one another, the City to the Bay, and the pedestrians and motorists of the Embarcadero to the waterfront’s rich past. The Bay Conservation and Development Commission gave the project its unanimous approval through design review and the Port of San Francisco issued a Building Permit for Phase 1 construction of improvements at Pier 19.
