Oceanic Thematic Pavilion & Research facility Competition Entry, 6,000 m2, Yeosu, Korea
Our solution for the Korean Oceanic Institute and Thematic Pavillion of 2013 is based on the structure of an H2O molecule, a fluid envelope that rests upon three raised escalator/elevator entry mounds to help it ride out the tsunami’s elevated surge and fierce coastal storms at its harbor side location. The building is intended as the centerpiece of the Expo that seeks to create a “Blue Ecopolis” focusing on the role of the ocean in ecology, economy, topography, and urban developments. The Aqua loggia provides a multilevel three chambered exhibition and research hall protected by lateral line sunshades and photovoltaics that control solar exposure and interior daylighting. The design simulates the spatial experience of being inside a water molecule while providing excellent views of the harbor and flexibility for mounting exhibits. The “atomic” shape cradles a small seaside cove with a floating dock for presentations and public performances.
